Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
