The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
