The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
