A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.
Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.
Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.
Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.
Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.
The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.
Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.
A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.
The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.
“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
