Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.
"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.
Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
